Automatic Rectification of Side-scan Sonar Images
نویسندگان
چکیده
The authors present a novel procedure for the automated rectification of side-scan sonar images. The traditional assumption of a flat seabed for the computation of the ground projection from the slant-range sonar data can later result in difficult geo-referencing and registration problems. Accurate rectification using actual seabed topography is required for precise integration of side-scan images into a high-resolution mosaic, which depends on the availability of seabed altitude maps for the area of interest. As an alternative the authors propose a procedure for the estimation of the most probable seabed topography given the acquired side-scan image and a simple scattering model. An Expectation-Maximization framework is constructed to iteratively determine the model parameters that best approximate the observed image.

Simultaneous Compression and Denoising of Side Scan Sonar Images Using the Discrete Wavelet Transform
There has been an increasing interest in the use of autonomous underwater vehicles for ocean exploration. Side scan sonars are often installed onboard these vehicles to survey the sea floor. In this context, the need to transmit side scan sonar images over an acoustic low-bandwidth channel calls for the use of compression techniques. This paper proposes a wavelet-based method for compressing si...

This is a review chapter that surveys past work in, and the recent status of image processing and other related techniques involved in the detection and classification of man made objects in side scan sonar images. Side scan sonar is a readily, available and cheap device which has found increasing applications, specially for military purposes such as Computer Aided Detection (CAD) and Classific...
متن کاملA New Radiometric Correction Method for Side-Scan Sonar Images in Consideration of Seabed Sediment Variation
Affected by the residual of time varying gain, beam patterns, angular responses, and sonar altitude variations, radiometric distortion degrades the quality of side-scan sonar images and seriously affects the application of these images. However, existing methods cannot correct distortion effectively, especially in the presence of seabed sediment variation. This study proposes a new radiometric ...
متن کاملConcurrent Mapping & Localisation Using Side-scan Sonar for Autonomous Navigation
Concurrent Mapping and Localisation (CML) is a proven and well-developed tool for navigating in unknown environments. It can be used as a substitute to common absolute sensors, such as GPS or acoustic baseline systems. The Ocean Systems Laboratory (OSL) recently developed a CML system that builds a map of the environment using observations of landmarks extracted from side-scan sonar (SS). This ...
متن کاملSimulation and 3D Reconstruction of Side-looking Sonar Images
Given the limited range and applicability of visual imaging systems in the underwater environment, sonar has been the preferred solution for the observation of the seabed since its inception in the 1950s (Blondel 2002). The images produced by the most commonly used side-looking sonars (side-scan and, more recently, synthetic aperture sonars) contain information on the backscatter strength recor...
